OUCRU Nepal: Research That Matters
The Oxford University Clinical Research Unit (OUCRU) is a leading clinical and public health research organization with teams based in Vietnam (Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi), Indonesia (Jakarta), and Nepal (Kathmandu).
In Nepal, OUCRU is committed to making a difference—locally, regionally, and globally—by leading research that's rooted in the community and focused on some of the most pressing infectious disease challenges.
Our journey in Nepal began in 2003. Over the years, what started as a research collaboration has become a trusted and essential part of the local hospital and the wider community. Much of our work happens right where it's needed most—among the people impacted by the diseases we study.
For over 20 years, we've been deeply engaged in the fight against enteric fever, a serious health threat in Nepal. We've studied Salmonella Typhi and Paratyphi to figure out the best treatment options, track how the disease spreads, and guide the rollout of typhoid vaccines. Now, we're shifting focus to an important remaining challenge: controlling the persistent gallbladder carriers of the bacteria, who continue spreading it even after widespread vaccination.
As Nepal experiences a sharp increase in dengue cases—especially in the Kathmandu Valley—our research has quickly adapted. We're working to measure the disease’s impact, analyze the viral strains in circulation, and develop better diagnostic tools. These efforts are crucial for shaping timely and effective public health responses.
Another area where we're making a growing impact is antimicrobial resistance (AMR), which threatens the treatment of many infectious diseases. OUCRU Nepal is helping set up surveillance systems in hospitals and launching stewardship programs to promote smarter use of antibiotics, working closely with national policymakers to ensure these efforts are sustainable.
Looking forward, we're expanding our research to tackle tuberculosis (TB). By conducting clinical trials on preventive therapies, we hope to generate evidence that can help reduce the burden of TB both in Nepal and around the world.
At its core, OUCRU Nepal is all about turning science into solutions. Our research isn't just about data and papers—it's about real change. Through clinical trials and collaboration, we're improving care, informing policies, and making sure the people of Nepal benefit directly from the work we do.
